Suzy and I really enjoy Bangkok. We have been here 7 or 8 times in the past two years and every time we come here we try to find another great spot in this vast city to explore. Bangkok spreads out over 605 square miles and has a population of over 8 million people. In comparison, Los Angeles, California is spread out over 470 square miles and has a population of only 3.9 million people. By any standard, Bangkok is a city chock full of people and it thrives by day as much as by night. In the daytime you’ll find shops and vendors selling any type of goods you can ask for and when the sun goes down you’ll find quite another side of Bangkok come to life. Certain sections of town have what is known as “Night Bazaars” which is what many Americans would call a street flea market. Here you can barter for clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, electronics and all sorts of souvenirs that I would categorize as “trinkets”. If you get hungry, many restaurants are available in every ethnicity you could imagine. The real treat is to do what the locals do, purchase food from the small mobile carts known as “street hawkers”. Suzy and I have found these hawkers to have some of the tastiest dishes available and at a price that will astound you. Some of the favorites are Satay, which is a piece of thin chicken or pork marinated, charcoal grilled and served on a stick, Fabulous! We also found that some of the cuisine is “area related” and what you find in one area you will not find in another, Suzy and I got used to this but cannot quite figure out why. We found fried chicken breasts to be amazingly tasty but only available in one area while Pad Thai or other noodle dishes were only available off a cart in another area. Soup seems to be the most universal of all and is slightly different tasting because of different ingredients depending where you go. Suzy especially liked the fresh fruit carts. Pineapple, Guava, Mango, Cantaloupe and Watermelon was readily available everywhere off a cart and was sliced up and served while you watched. If you’re up for a suit or some type of custom tailored clothing, Bangkok has some of the most talented craftsman available. Suzy and I were amazed by the sheer volume of custom tailors available and they are not shy as they will come right up to you and ask for our business while walking around the city. While in Chiang Mai, we did finally give in and try a tailor. Suzy had a few designer name dress shirts she loved but the manufacturer was no longer making the style so one afternoon I decided to find out just what they could do for us. You first start by choosing the fabric right off the bolt and then discuss measurements, buttons, and various other aspects of getting the style right. In the end, we got some really great high quality shirts at a price which was quite fair. Hotels in Bangkok are abundant. You can get a bed at a brothel for just a few dollars or you can easily find a 5 star hotel with a pool and breakfast for about one-third of what you would pay in the US. As with any major city, you’ll have to put in quite some time to find just what you are looking for but no matter what it is you’re looking for, you’ll find that Bangkok has it. We just love this city and cannot seem to get enough.
