Last year while Suzy and I were attending culinary school in Chiang Mai, Chef Thanapon told us of a blues bar downtown. Nothing else needed to be said, Suzy and I were always open to an evening of fun and music. The club is in an unlikely place, it sets atop the mezzanine level of the Kalare Night Bazaar. The night bazaar is an “evenings only” flea market of goods and wares of every type. While wandering the market shopping for great buys, at about 8:30pm you can begin to hear the music of Boy Blues Bar. Just follow your ears and walk up the stairs to Boy’s place, a nice size club that provides fantastic entertainment until the early morning hours. We were immediately taken by Boy; his approachable, quiet nature makes you feel right at home. Just grab a cocktail or a glass of wine and sit and enjoy. We talked with Boy for quite a while, turns out he’s acquired himself quite a college degree in music and it easily shows when he takes to the stage every night at about 10:30. One evening every week Boy hosts an “open mike” night. Any person who is deemed talented can get on stage and jam with Boy and the band. This makes for wide variety of entertainment as you’re allowed to do two songs if it works well. Originally I thought this idea was going to be a “wanabe show” but Boy has this already figured out and the show is a never ending evening of talent. The harmonica player towards the end of this video is one of these performers and yes, as you can see, he is unbelievably talented. One other performer who blew us away was the “coming and going man” the last performer on this video. When we spoke to Boy about him, we were told that he wrote the song for his girlfriend who was in India at the time; you can see her sitting in the front row in the blue outfit. She is now his wife and is here in Thailand with him. Suzy and I really enjoy just talking with Boy while at the club and just cannot get enough of his entertainment. You might ask as I did: “what is your real name?” Suzy and I were told that it’s quite long and hard to pronounce. Regardless of name, our friend Boy is an amazingly talented guy who runs a fabulous club. Suzy and I spent two weeks this year with Boy and enjoyed every evening. We cannot wait until next time when we get to come back again on our new visa. Enjoy the video, just click on it for full HD screen and please share it with your friends.
