It was not so long ago that Bratislava was holding Candle demonstrations against communism in 1988. Bratislava later became the center of the Velvet Revolutions in 1989, and became the Capital of the Slovak Republic in 1993. The country is moving forward and is quite interesting to wander around. Touring the old city you’ll find plenty of Slovak restaurants and sidewalk cafe’s to suit your fancy. There were plenty of cuisines to choose from. We found a Cuban restaurant that was frequented regularly serving all sorts of favorites and we also indulged one evening in some Thai food which was quite good. Suzy and I warmed up to an Italian Restaurant there as the manager and staff was from Assisi, as is the name of the restaurant. The manager and staff were friendly, helpful and expert in preparing some of our Italian favorites. Yes, we did miss our Italian food; this year’s adventure did not take us back through Italy. After weeks of German food and passing through Switzerland and Austria, Suzy and I just had a craving for pasta and we found it at Assisi. Evenings were quite nice, you found yourself at a sidewalk cafe and had wandering musicians come by your table and serenade you for a few minutes and wander off to the next restaurant. Afterwards cocktails were in order so we had found some great bars, one of which was in a catacomb type of basement setting and it offered live entertainment. We found ourselves there more than one evening. In the morning, Suzy and I found our way to the courtyard in the center of town. Here we found a bagel store that made fresh bagels and it came with a schmere of your favorite cream cheese, although in Slovakia it was not called a schmere. Suzy and I spent a week here and enjoyed every moment. It was a great find and are glad we visited.
