Walt Disney may have put together a fairy tale town for us to enjoy but here you’ll find a real one right outside of Munich in the German Alps. Oberammergau is famous for its Passion Play and Wood Carving School but the artistically painted buildings will keep your attention.
Back in 1634, the bubonic plague was covering the region. When a man traveling through town came down with the plague, the inhabitants made a vow to perform a passion play every 10 years if the town was spared from the disease. Well the man died from the plague but all other towns people were spared of the disease so every 10 years since 1634, the Passion Play has been performed. In 2010, more than 2000 villagers participated in this performance and have had visitors come to see its performance from all over the world. The Bavarian State Woodcarvers School is also located here and requires trainees to study more than four years to graduate. Wood carvings can be found in shops all over town and are quite intricate in design. For Suzy and I, it was the painted buildings with Bavarian themes, fairy tales and religious themes that took the show. We really enjoyed it here and look forward to returning another day to spend more time.
