Suzy and I arrived in Brussels and immediately noticed that we were in a French speaking city. The architecture resembled Antwerp but everything else was quite different. People here were in a hurry, much like being in New York. Everywhere you look you could see that this city was alive and well. The main city square was just amazing. Everywhere you look you’ll find beautiful buildings, one more beautiful than the other. Chocolate shops here were dominant and could be found on every street. Most people were found to be window shopping along small narrow streets. If you were paying attention as you walk, you’ll find quite a few shops offering Belgian Waffles. These waffles are made to order, cooked as you waited and topped with your favorite choice of goodies. The going price is 1 Euro for the waffle and 1 Euro for every added topping; add whipped cream, strawberries and chocolate syrup, it will cost you 4 Euros, just decadent. Here’s a tip: Bring a fork, you’ll be given a 2 pronged tooth pick to eat the waffle. I remember in the old days at Coney Island, Nathan’s. You were given the same 2 pronged device for the fries; it works for fries but not for waffles. In the evenings, the city took on a much different character. Locals came out and made sure to stop in at their local bar and visit with friends. You’ll find them standing outside in the streets with drinks in hand as some of these bars were quite small. We were able to find a local pub that was offering live music that evening. The band was Bacon Fat and had made it to Brussels from England. This three member band was quite entertaining; we spent quite a few hours there that night. See the video here. If there was one thing that stood out about Brussels, it was that the people there enjoyed their night life.
