After Lubeck, Suzy and I made our way west to Bremen. We really enjoyed Lubeck, it was full of history. Bremen by all accounts should be even better. Bremen dates back to the 7th century and is the 10th most populous city in Germany. This city is a mixed blend of old and new. The buildings are spectacular. The architecture is amazing. Everywhere you look you will be amazed. This city was built in a time when true artisans were alive and well. Sitting in the town square makes you feel you’ve been transported back in time. There’s something delightful about this city that you can’t really put a finger on but you can definitely feel it. You’ll find statues everywhere, around every corner you’ll find a street musician. Looking into a shop window you’ll find small loaves of bread, bread like you’ve dreamed of. I come from Brooklyn, we have great bread, this is better by far. The parks in Bremen are huge, it is clear that people care about the parks here. They are clean and well-manicured. Families are found walking spending quality time together. Flowers are everywhere and sculpted in such a way as to become candy to the eye. We stayed at the Swissotel in Bremen. Inside we found sculptures everywhere. On every turn you get the feeling that this is a very special city. Suzy and I sought out the Four Musicians of Bremen. We were able to find the sculpture made of solid brass and gave a rub to the donkey’s hooves. As legend has it, rubbing the hoof will bring good luck. If you remember your Grimm’s fairy tales, this is where the story resides. We wandered off to the river where you’ll find the Weser promenade. This is another beautiful place along the Weser River where you’ll find an abundance of street cafe’s where you can sit, eat and drink while watching the passersby. Behind large commercial buildings on a main road we came across an alleyway. Entering the alley brought us to the old downtown city of Schnoor. Here we found an old medieval city of quaint, small structured buildings. The streets here were of cobblestone and were about two feet wide in some places. Originally this area was a workplace for making rope and chain for ships. Now the buildings were all decorated in different colors and converted to shops and cafes. Suzy and I really enjoyed Bremen. We will put it on our list of places to return to.
