Although a New Yorker, after circling the globe in 210 days, Suzy and I agree, New York is a one of a kind city. We arrived just in time for the Holidays and the city is all decked out in Holiday decoration. In my opinion, there is no better time to visit New York than during the Christmas Holiday season. After being away for almost a year one of the first things we wanted to do was to visit the newly completed One World Trade Center. This new tower proudly stands 1776 feet tall, boasts 104 stories, 3 million square feet of interior and is quite an environmental, eco-friendly masterpiece. It stands just next to the original site of 1WTC which is now the Ground-Zero memorial commemorating the 9/11 attacks of 2001 and 1993 WTC bombing. The 9/11 Memorial features two enormous waterfalls and reflecting pools, each about an acre in size, set within the footprints of the original twin towers. 2 World Trade Center is still under construction. When completed it will soar some 1349 feet in the air and will encompass some 3.1 million square feet. As a New Yorker, you cannot help but feel privileged to be a part of this accomplishment. When you visit here you find yourself filled with mixed emotions, some good, and some sad as you read the inscriptions on the memorial pool walls.
From Ground Zero we made our way into China Town for a bowl of Hot Wonton Soup and then we were off to Rockefeller Center to have a look at this year’s Christmas tree. We were fortunate enough to visit at a time while the tree was illuminated. The tree was unplugged in memorial for Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu who were shot and killed by a lone gunman in Brooklyn where I grew up.
Through all of the tragedy, New Yorkers are still able to find all of the good and the time to give thanks for all we have and for all we are during this Holiday season.
