Suzy and I arrived in Phnom Penh from Chiang Mai. We came to explore and enjoy the history and culture of this country. Phnom Penh seemed to be a good place to start as it is this country’s largest city. The people here are friendly and eager to interact with you. They often ask where you’re from and are quick to offer some expertise to guide you in your explorations. As you look around it is easy to see the heavy French influence in its architecture. We stayed at “La Librairie” a boutique hotel about 2 blocks from the Mekong River. This hotel was quite a surprise; on the second floor you’ll find a wall to wall library full of novels in quite a few languages. Just choose a book, enjoy it in its reading area or take it with you. You may also leave a book for the next hotel guest. It offers old world charm with new world amenities. From this hotel it was quite easy for us to walk around the city, explore the sites, enjoy the shopping and in the evening, enjoy dinner at one of the hundreds of choices of restaurants along the river. Choices were a luxury Suzy and I had not seen for quite some time. You can grab a burger, try out the countries Khmer cuisine, enjoy Thai foods, or indulge in some high end specialty cuisine like Spinach filled Ravioli in cream sauce, Grilled Salmon or a great Steak. Wine is readily available at great prices. Phnom Penh is certainly a delightful place full of culture and hospitality. It is no wonder why it is called the Pearl of Asia.
