Suzy and I boarded the Ferry at Koh Phi Phi Island for a 3 hour trip to Phuket on the mainland. After making our way around the island and out to sea, it was easy to see that this trip was going to be a rough one. The waves were high, about 6+ feet and the ferry, very unforgiving of the waves. Most passengers were scared to death, some even turning pale as we made our way across the inlet. Once we arrived at port, all was well as we then grabbed a taxi to the Hotel. We are staying at the Baan Lai Mai Hotel in a penthouse suite for 5 days… what a treat. The rooms were large and the pool, spectacular. The beach here has wonderful fine grained sand but swimming here is quite another story, you’ll find waves high enough to knock you down as you enter the sea and this makes swimming all the more difficult. Just bring a beach towel, dig in and enjoy the sun.
Phuket is well known as a Thai tourist haven. Everything and anything is available here. You can go street shopping here, go to a large mall, go to the beach, eat any of the world’s fine cuisines, or indulge in some of the professional aspects of the city. Suzy and I elected to go street window shopping. As we wandered from shop to shop, as soon as I was some 10 feet away from Suzy, the professionals were all over me. One on each arm with big smiles asking; “make happy?” I pointed to Suzy and said “Blondie make happy”. Once they heard that, I was then quickly released until the next block where it started all over again. If that was not enough, in the evening, about 3 blocks from the Hotel, they close off one of the more infamous roads here. On Bangla Road you’ll find an assortment of all the sleaze and degenerates even your mind could not imagine. Every step you’ll find someone telling you all about the shows his club has to offer, From Lady-Boys in full dress to Ping Pong Shows, this street makes Kaosan Road in Bangkok look like Rodeo Drive. Suzy and I found an outside bar with street-side tables. We ordered a couple of cocktails and entertained ourselves by just watching the crowd. We were glad to see that at either end of this road, you’ll find plenty of Police. Their job is to contain the street entertainment and over-indulgers and make sure none of them escape the boundaries of this place.
