Suzy and I boarded a night train in Hua Hin bound for Surat Thani, a 9 hour trip South from Hua Hin. We figured that the train would be better than riding in a bus for 10 hours and the train offered air conditioning and sleeping facilities. As it turned out, this was a great choice. The train pulled into Surat Thani at 9am. We were somewhat rested as we promptly boarded a Tour Bus for a 2 hour trip bound for the coast where we then changed to a Ferry. The Ferry was another 3 hour ride, when completed, we arrived at Koh Phangan. As we pulled into the port, it reminded me of a textbook tropical island you see in grade school. If Gilligan got lost, I might just find him here. We then flagged a taxi and we made our way towards our Hotel. The taxi gave us quite a scare; I thought he would never find the place. As it turns out there is another resort by almost the same name. We pulled down this side road, made a few turns left and right and finally, we arrived. Our reservation at the Sabai Bay Resort put us in a “Beach Bungalow” right on the beach, about 50 yards from the water. We had full amenities, air conditioning, infinity pool, and a great restaurant ready to cook you some of the finest fresh Thai foods you can imagine. The view from our bungalow was unbelievable; the water here looks ice blue and is crystal clear. Our 5 day stay here was one of the most relaxing we have found anywhere. If you’re looking for a getaway hideout, this is it and unless you’re wearing an ankle bracelet, they will never find you here.
