Perugia is probably our favorite city to date, why we are not quite sure. Maybe we like the idea of it being a hillside city or perhaps we like the ancient narrow winding stone stairways that takes you from place to place. Whatever our reasons, you can find yourself lost here in time. Below us you can find the ancient underground city and above ground fortress of Rocca Paolina. (link) The above ground fortress was mostly destroyed by a over zealous Pope and now covered by new construction but some of the underground city remains today. On open ground above Rocca Paolina you can see for miles, it is everything you would think of from the film; “My House in Umbria” open grounds for farming, olive groves, grape vineyards and the like. If you are like Suzy and I, you might prefer a house in the city instead of in the countryside. Our perfect city home is shown in the photo. For an ancient city, Perugia, founded by Flavius Maximus in 310 BC, it still holds all you can imagine Umbria may be like. It also is the home for Perugina chocolates and fantastic wine. What else could you ask for.
