After moving inland from Civitavecchia, we decided that Rome was to be the next adventure. Easter Sunday was four days away and we have found a hotel in Rome to drop our bags and enjoy the city. We eagerly began to explore and decided that we would take the shot at getting into St Peters square on Easter Sunday. Since tickets are free, we knew trying this would not be easy. We found a shuttle to St Peters that got us to the square around 8:20…… about an hour and a half before mass started. We got about 1/2 mile from the place and the Carabinieri had the place under guard. There was only one way into the square and the people were everywhere. We decided to make the most of it and just do as the Roman’s do…. Push your way in… About 45 minutes later we found ourselves inside the square and in front of baggage x-ray machines and walk through metal detectors like at all the airports. Yes… these guys had it down to a science and it was all portable. Surprisingly well organised and under control. Once inside the square we were delighted to find that the crowd outside was larger than the one inside. We quickly made our way forward and found a nice spot close enough to stand and wait for mass to start. Our Pope appeared on the scene shortly after and the crowd went to full cheer. First, the Pope began to use the burning incense to bless all from one corner to the next, then Mass began. Well… mass was like in the old days, said in Latin…. Wonderful to hear it said that way again. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
